Lecco Cultural Center

Academic project

How can an abandoned building become a catalyst for community life?

Overview

Located in Lecco, this project transforms an underused building into a vibrant community center that brings together culture, learning, and social interaction. The design is organized around a flexible amphitheater that acts as the heart of the project, connecting indoor and outdoor activities through performances, events, and public gatherings. Offices, a library, exhibition spaces, and a café create a diverse program that encourages people of different ages and backgrounds to share the same place. Rather than replacing the existing structure, the project builds upon it, giving the building a new purpose while preserving its identity.

Multi-Functional Amphitheater

Positioned at the heart of the community center, the amphitheater serves as a flexible space for performances, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, and everyday gatherings. Opening directly onto the central courtyard, it allows activities to extend seamlessly between indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging spontaneous interaction and year-round public use. More than a performance venue, it becomes the social core that brings together culture, education, and community life.

Adaptive Reuse

The existing structure is preserved and repurposed as an open workspace for students and young professionals, extending the building's life while reducing the environmental impact of new construction. Minimal architectural interventions enhance daylight, natural ventilation, and energy performance, creating flexible workspaces that support collaboration, study, and innovation without compromising the character of the original building.
